The 37th annual VDP will assemble in Downtown Joplin beginning at 8:30 a.m. between 15th and 20th Streets on Main Street.
At 10:00 a.m. the parade will process North bound on Main Street, turning West (left) onto 3rd Street, then turning South (left) onto Joplin Avenue concluding in the parking lot behind City Hall at 6th Street. Due to liability constraints, no tossing of objects or candy will be permitted along the parade route. However many entrants will have walkers passing out items to the spectators! We hope you’ll join us as we pay tribute to our great American heroes, our Veterans!

I am delighted to share my involvement with the Columbia Memorial Stair Climb and the amazing individuals behind it like Ryan Benedict and Mr. Joe Torrillo. The climb, hosted at the University of Missouri-Columbia, is a tribute to the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice.
Founded in 2016, the Columbia Memorial Stair Climb's inaugural event took place on May 6, 2017. Proceeds from the registration fee support foundations dedicated to assisting First Responders and their families. Ryan Benedict now the Director for the climb and a Lieutenant for Boone County, has shown incredible dedication and leadership. Together with his committee team, including Erica Rideout (she is awesome), they have exceeded all expectations in honoring our heroes. The 10 Year Anniversary logo released! Run May 22, 2021! Registration opens January 26 with one week special kickoff pricing! This year’s Freeman Joplin Memorial Run 10 year Anniversary logo honors seven symbols of hope and renewal, several featured as past icons of hope for our running series. In the weeks after the storm, Freeman Hospital was the only light we could see on the dark horizon of the city, and the Freeman Memorial continues to shine as a beacon of light today.
Similarly, St. Mary’s Cross, which was the only thing left standing on that site, became a symbol of strength and endurance. The Butterfly emblem represents God’s angels “butterfly people,” who watched over our citizens during the storm. The Memorial Ring represents the strength of the human spirit, on display in the rebuilding efforts of the survivors and volunteers who flooded Joplin after the tornado. The Spirit Tree, which became a home for local birds after so many trees were destroyed, has become a symbol of care for the vulnerable and displaced. The duct-taped letters that spell out HopE High School, after the J and lin were ripped from the Joplin sign, represent our commitment to rebuild stronger than ever. What's Up Downtown
@Downtown Joplin Alliance / Summer 2019 The appeal of taking something from history and bringing it back to life has always fascinated Kimberly Favazzo Patrum, owner of VAZZO Creative, an innovative, full-service marketing firm. So when she got the opportunity to create a new home for her company at 512 S. Joplin Ave, a locale alive with history, she couldn’t resist. With a historic, industrial, and modern design aesthetic in mind, Kimberly has succeeded in transforming the location back to its former glory. Exposing an abundance of gorgeous brick and stone in addition to showcasing the original art deco tin ceilings are only a few of the amazing discoveries on display. The beauty that was uncovered, inspired Patrum to add on a new element to VAZZO companies: VAZZO Venue, the perfect setting for intimate gatherings in a captivating space. While uncovering countless charming features within the building, Patrum was also thrilled to discover the dynamic past of the space as well. Beginning as a Sorber-Kuhn Auto Supply Company back in 1916 followed by the Joplin Pleating and Button Company in the 1920’s it was soon transformed into The Grand Union Tea Company, a door-to-door grocery store that delivered goods in horse-drawn carriages, until the supermarket was developed and Crescent Grocery took over. In later years, the location also served as a bar, a print shop, and finally as a stainless glass shop. Buying downtown allowed Patrum to bring this piece of history back to life by peeling back the layers of the past and restoring the location to its original, breathtaking design. Now that VAZZO Creative and VAZZO Venue have settled comfortably into the historic district, Patrum continues her goal to help rejuvenate and repopulate the downtown Joplin area. In an effort to both promote the newest VAZZO venture and to help beautify the area, 909 S. Main now serves as a charming window display for |
VAZZO Promotional Products, fulfilling the needs of any promotional products a company may desire.
The modernization of the 900 block continues with Patrum’s recent rentals at 909 ½ S. Main housing an up-and-coming IT business, Tech Hound, and 911 S. Main, which is now home to Freebird Boutique. These additions are helping to clean up, modernize, and enhance the “Shop Local” atmosphere that is bringing Downtown Joplin back to life. While growing her own business is, of course, especially important, Patrum understands the bigger picture in the growth and improvement of the Downtown area as well. By repopulating that area with these businesses and with help from other locals including Lori and Jeremy Haun who are renovating multiple storefronts and apartment units on the 800 and 900 blocks, the goal is to help create a nicer and more inviting atmosphere that will drive in more business and enhance the community atmosphere as a whole.
The Joplin Downtown area is currently thriving with events such as Downtown Joplin Alliance Third Thursday and First Friday Wine Share. In addition to the influx of local boutiques and restaurants, Downtown is quickly converting into a stylish destination and gathering place for the community. With the abundance of locals investing their time and money into renovations such as the Joplin Empire Market and Spiva Center for the Arts, more unique opportunities for shopping, eating, and entertainment for all ages are bound to appear creating an atmosphere of enjoyment and acceptance for the entire downtown area

While growing her own business is, of course, especially important, Patrum understands the bigger picture in the growth and improvement of the Downtown area as well. By repopulating that area with these businesses and with help from other locals including Lori and Jeremy Haun who are renovating multiple storefronts and apartment units on the 800 and 900 blocks, the goal is to help create a nicer and more inviting atmosphere that will drive in more business and enhance the community atmosphere as a whole.
The Joplin Downtown area is currently thriving with events such as Downtown Joplin Alliance Third Thursday and First Friday Wine Share. In addition to the influx of local boutiques and restaurants, Downtown is quickly converting into a stylish destination and gathering place for the community. With the abundance of locals investing their time and money into renovations such as the Joplin Empire Market and Spiva Center for the Arts, more unique opportunities for shopping, eating, and entertainment for all ages are bound to appear creating an atmosphere of enjoyment and acceptance for the entire downtown area

A Joplin group starts a project to clean up downtown

"Me, myself, I just think it's important to give back when you can." For Kimberly Favazzo Patrum, it's all about putting that best foot forward. Kimberly Favazzo Patrum from the "Clean Team" says, "In order for us to share the passion we have for where we live and people that come to joplin that have never been here before we want them to feel like we feel." She's just one of the volunteers cleaning up the alley southwest of 5th and Joplin. It's a project called the "Downtown Joplin Clean Team."
John Coleman from Downtown Joplin Alliance says, "Picking up trash, the cigarette butt count is too high in this city I think so a lot of that, pulling weeds." The Downtown Joplin Alliance has been shepherding the program, picking two sites a month for a little TLC.
"Cause a good looking city is attractive to other people - our goal is to try and get other businesses to come in downtown and for Joplin to flourish and grow," says Coleman.
They've already focused on areas of Main Street and Virginia Avenue. And they encourage others to join the project, even if they can't make it to a designated "Clean Team" event. Coleman says, "Just step out into your parking lot or out onto your alley. You know if you've got team members, you know, take a little short break at lunch. Go out and enjoy some sunshine while you pick up a little bit and you'll make your parking lot look a lot better."
They've already set the next time and date for May 24th at 9:30 a.m. at 5th and Joplin. For more on the group, click here.

Wally Kennedy: Shuffle continues for storefronts old and new

New life for old storefronts There’s a reason why three old storefronts in the 900 block of South Main Street have been occupied for the first time in a long time. First, the three storefronts in the Eisen Building, built in 1921, had to be renovated. Second, someone was needed who could see the property’s potential and the possibility that someday it might be part of something much larger. Kimberly Favazzo Patrum, owner of Promotional Products, 512 S. Joplin Ave., said she purchased the Eisen Building at 909 S. Main St. in October because “I love the area and I believe it’s going to be developed.” Two of the storefronts in the building were ready for occupants. The third had to be completed before she could move forward. Patrum has experience with renovation. It took her 11/2 years to renovate 512 S. Joplin Ave. “Our roof leaked every time it rained. You have got to stay on top of these old buildings,” she said. “You can’t let them go.” Patrum said she uses one of the storefronts as a window display for the full line of promotional products she offers. “We are a full-service marketing agency. Our client base is automotive and banking. We also build websites and do digital advertising,” she said. “When it comes to marketing, we can do it.” The other storefronts are occupied by Tech Hound, a computer repair service, and Freebird Boutique, a women’s clothing and home decor store. We had over 50 kids complete a Bio-Doc for the parents to have in case of emergency. The event was designed to provide safety tips for parents along with fun for the kids with touring the Harrisonville Fire truck, play in bounce houses and have their face painted.
